About MakeMake Digital Library en Español

MakeMake Digital Library en Español is a reading platform designed for children ages 3 to 15 that offers a carefully selected collection of fiction and non-fiction books from more than 100 Latin American publishers totaling, as of today, 3000 eBooks. We serve Spanish-speaking schools and public libraries primarily in Latin America and the United States of America. MakeMake started in 2015 as a small experiment with less than one hundred books and has grown since then into a fully-fledged reading project that combines a powerful but easy-to-use platform, a careful selection of high-quality books, an online live program with authors and illustrators, hundreds of reading guides and an annual reading plan.

MakeMake is a multi-user access system that allows a user-friendly reading experience specially designed for institutions. The collection offers a variety of formats like flipbooks, ePubs and interactive HTML5 books. The collection is sourced from a great variety of print publishers from Latin America, as well as a few from Spain and the USA. About 95% of our collection is originally written in Spanish by authors born in Latin America, Spain and the USA. Our collection is a mix of fiction and non-fiction books with a strong emphasis on illustrated books such as comics, graphic novels, picture books and illustrated stories. We also strive to include diverse genres, such as drama, poetry, novels, short stories, reference and non-fiction. All books available in MakeMake were first published in print by small to mid-size publishers from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Guatemala, Venezuela and Peru. A few Spanish publishers have also contributed their books to MakeMake, especially those written by Latin American authors. North American publishers in MakeMake are selected because they carry bilingual titles and because they publish Central American authors, as well as books that represent the Latino experience in the USA.

Interactive books are unique and exclusive to MakeMake and comprise a growing collection of 140 titles, as of today, created in collaboration with different publishers as well as original creations, including Bologna Book Fair winners "In My Dreams" by Stephane Kiehl and "Doble Doble" by Menena Cottin. All interactive books are different. Some are based on songs, like "Te cuento del camino lo que vi" or "Arriba Juan"; others include bifurcated narratives, like "Muerte en el bosque" and "El Conejo ingenioso"; some are designed to teach words, numbers and figures, like "Pío Pío", "Mi primer diccionario", "Benjamín el pirata" or "Mi pequeña fábrica de historias"; while others are simply fun stories with animations and read-along features.

MakeMake is also a robust software designed to serve institutions, including features such as Single Sign-On protocols, MARC records, downloadable reading statistics, offline reading, accessibility enhancements and bilingual technical support. We have also developed apps for iOS and Android operating systems. The software is adapted to both schools and libraries. In library mode, MakeMake is an open shelf that allows free navigation of all titles. Administrators can access a statistics module, select their book collection and download marketing materials. In school mode, each individual student has a personalized book account with their own statistics, favorite books and books recommended by the teacher. Teachers and administrators can oversee reading statistics for each student as well as classrooms, create book clubs, and assign books to classrooms and specific students. This system is designed to connect with Google Classrooms, Microsoft 365, ClassLink and Clever, allowing interoperability and easy authentication while protecting students' data privacy.

As an independent platform with an intense focus on reading promotion for kids in schools and libraries, MakeMake is also unique because it is the product of a small Colombian publishing company, Makina Editorial, that has been able to carve a niche in a market dominated by massive corporations. MakeMake is sustained by real sales for real readers, which makes us very good at listening and serving our readers, who include students, teachers, librarians, publishers and authors. MakeMake has also helped small publishers in Latin America enter the digital market, offering personalized guidance and information that is not always readily accessible on bigger platforms. We have also helped publishers connect with institutional buyers in Colombia and in the USA, who buy the print versions of the books read in MakeMake, thus serving as a discovery tool for specialized book buyers.

But more than anything, MakeMake is a community of teachers and librarians who are looking for ways to connect young readers with stories and to foster in them a love for books. In different user studies and surveys, we have found that MakeMake can encourage the circulation of printed books, reach remote readers in different parts of the city or the countryside, and provide direct access to the same book to multiple users, thus increasing their familiarity with written words.
